Every 3 years, Peter van de Kerkhof has organised the Britse Automobieldagen, a rally for British cars at Sint Oedenrode in the Netherlands. This year’s event was the 10th and last, as Peter has now retired from this role to devote more time to his family.Show-winning Whitley

5 Armstrong Siddeleys from the UK attended as Peter is very much an Armstrong Siddeley enthusiast, as the logo for the event clearly shows, and about the same number of Siddeleys came with their Dutch owners. In addition there were many other British marques represented. Weather, organisation and hospitality were all notably fabulous, which made for a very enjoyable weekend away. The UK cars were a 1938 16HP, Hurricane, Typhoon, Whitley and Sapphire 346, and they all completed hundreds of miles during the trip with only a few minor problems. Fred and Carole Luscombe did a deal with the European Flying Insect Federation to stop flies flattening themselves on their immaculate Whitley, and won best car at the show.

LHD 346Ben and Sylvia Ros brought out their smart left-hand drive Sapphire with factory fitted electric windows, from a 20 year hibernation, and Edwin and Sylvia Bos came in their Lancaster, having just completed a tour of the Lake District.

What have we learned from this? – that Peter van de Kerkhof organises excellent events and that owning an Armstrong Siddeley is good, but getting them out on the road is sublime.
