A review of 2015 Autumn Ambles
Traditionally several areas hold short fun-runs/rallies at this time of year. This year's “Autumn Ambles” were held in the South Midlands Area and also the Southern area both over a really fine weekend in mid-October.
The South Midlands area run started and finished at Paul Coombs' house in Chepstow and covered some of the wonderful Monmouthshire countryside. Two Whitleys, Two Star Sapphires, a pre-war 20hp, a Ford Prefect convertible and a modern Mazda all completed the 70-mile run without any problems. We had coffee at the start, a break at a ruined castle and finally reached a lovely old pub tucked away up a narrow lane on a hillside for a super lunch. After lunch we completed the run with visits to Abergavenny and a drive across a splendid hilltop by-road with commanding views across the Bristol Channel. All thanks must go to Paul and Margaret Coombs for their great efforts in organising it for us.
The Southern area amble started and finished at a Garden Center near Farnham. The run took them
through the surrey leafy lanes under bright blue skies. Taking part were two Siddeley Specials, two Typhoons, a 346 and a Star plus three modern cars. On the conclusion of the run lunch was served followed by a quiz. The tie breaker was to provide a caption to a photo (see below) of who said what to whom? The prize winning answer was - Cicily “Whats' that black thing there?” Mike “Its a tyre, you stupid woman.” An alternative response was also - Cicily “I told you we hit a fly”
Thanks go to Geoff and Jenny Poplar for organising another fine event.
